Praying for Those Who Need God

God desires for people to know Him.

As followers of Jesus, one of the most meaningful things we can do is pray for the people around us who do not yet know Him personally. We cannot force someone into faith, and we cannot change another person’s heart by our own effort. But we can pray faithfully, love people genuinely, and trust God to work in ways we cannot see. 

This prayer guide gives us five simple ways to pray for those who need God.

1. Ask the Father to Draw Them to Jesus

Jesus said:

“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws them…”
John 6:44 NIV

This reminds us that salvation begins with God.

Our responsibility is not to pressure people into belief. Our responsibility is to pray that God would draw their hearts toward Him. 

Think of specific people in your life.

Family members. Friends. Coworkers. Neighbors. People you care about deeply.

Pray for them by name.

“Father, draw their hearts to You. Let them recognize the deeper longing inside them and understand that only You can truly satisfy it. Open their ears to hear Your voice and awaken a desire in them to know You.”

Sometimes the greatest thing we can do for someone is consistently bring their name before God.

2. Pray That Their Eyes Would Be Opened to Truth

The guide points to 2 Corinthians 4:4, which describes how unbelievers can be blinded from seeing the light of the Gospel. 

There may be many things standing between someone and faith.

Past experiences.

Wrong ideas about God.

Pain.

Disappointment.

Distractions.

Fear.

Pride.

Or simply never having truly heard or understood the Gospel.

Pray that whatever is preventing them from seeing God clearly would be removed.

“Father, remove every obstacle that keeps them from seeing You clearly. Bring truth where there is confusion. Open their eyes to who Jesus really is and help them recognize Your love.”

You do not have to know exactly what is happening in someone’s heart.

God does.

Trust Him to reach the places you cannot.

3. Pray for a Personal Relationship With God

Christianity is not simply about knowing information about God.

It is about knowing Him personally.

Romans 8:15 speaks about being adopted into God’s family and knowing Him as Father. 

That is what we ultimately want for the people around us.

Not simply that they attend a church service.

Not simply that they agree with a certain idea.

But that they encounter the love of God personally.

Pray:

“Father, help them understand how deeply You love them. Let them experience You personally. Stir something in their heart that draws them home to You. Help them know that they are invited into relationship with You, not into empty religion.”

There are moments when one genuine encounter with God can change the direction of someone’s life.

Pray for those moments.

4. Pray for Believers to Cross Their Paths

God often uses people to reach people.

Jesus told His followers:

“Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.”
Matthew 9:38 NIV

The guide encourages us to pray that believers would cross the paths of those who need God—and that we ourselves would be ready to be one of those people. 

Someone may need a Christian coworker who lives with unusual kindness.

Someone may need a friend who listens without judgment.

Someone may need an invitation to church at exactly the right time.

Someone may simply need to see what genuine love for Jesus looks like in everyday life.

Pray:

“God, place the right people around them. Bring believers into their life who will represent You with love, wisdom, grace, and authenticity.”

And then ask:

“Could I be one of those people?”

Ask God to make your own life an honest reflection of His love.

Let your actions support your prayers.

Serve people.

Listen to them.

Care about their lives.

Be present.

Sometimes the doorway to a conversation about Jesus begins with someone realizing, “This person genuinely cares about me.”

5. Pray for Wisdom and Revelation

The final step in the guide comes from Ephesians 1:17:

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation, so that you may know Him better.”
Ephesians 1:17 NIV

There are things about God that cannot simply be argued into someone.

They need revelation.

People need to recognize their need for God, understand what Jesus accomplished through the cross, and see the hope that comes through surrendering their lives to Him. 

Pray:

“Father, give them wisdom and revelation. Help them understand who Jesus is and what He has done for them. Give them the right conversations, experiences, and understanding they need to recognize Your truth.”

Ask God to connect the pieces.

A conversation they had years ago.

Something they read.

A difficult season.

Someone’s testimony.

A church service.

A quiet moment when they suddenly begin asking deeper questions.

God can use all of it.

Choose Five People to Pray For

A simple way to make this practical is to choose five people who do not yet know God personally.

Write their names somewhere you will see them.

Then pray for them consistently.

You can pray through these five areas:

Draw them to Jesus.
Open their eyes to truth.
Give them a personal encounter with God.
Place believers in their path.
Give them wisdom and revelation.

Do not become discouraged if nothing seems to change immediately.

You may not be able to see what God is doing beneath the surface.

Keep praying.

Keep loving.

Keep believing.

A Simple Prayer for Those Who Need God

Father, I bring the people You have placed on my heart before You.

Draw them toward Jesus. Awaken a hunger in them for something deeper and help them recognize that You are the One they are searching for.

Remove every obstacle that keeps them from seeing You clearly. Replace confusion with truth and open their hearts to the Gospel.

Let them encounter Your love personally. Help them understand that You are a Father who welcomes them and wants relationship with them.

Place the right believers around them. Send people who will represent You with grace, truth, kindness, and genuine love. And if You want to use me, give me wisdom and courage to recognize the opportunity.

Give them wisdom and revelation so they can understand who Jesus is, what He has done for them, and the life You are inviting them into.

Never Stop Praying for People

Sometimes we want immediate results.

God often works through a process.

A seed is planted.

A conversation happens.

A question begins.

A heart softens.

Someone starts searching.

And eventually, something that seemed impossible begins to change.

Our role is to remain faithful.

Pray for them.
Love them.
Serve them.
Live authentically around them.
Trust God with the outcome.

You never know which prayer, conversation, invitation, or act of kindness God may use to bring someone one step closer to Him.

So keep their names before God.

And keep believing that no one is beyond His reach.
