The Lord’s Prayer: A Simple Pattern for Daily Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer is one of the most familiar prayers in Scripture, but Jesus gave it to us as more than something to recite. It is a model for prayer, a pattern we can follow every day.
When one of Jesus’ disciples said, “Lord, teach us to pray,” Jesus responded with this prayer:
“Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:9–13 NKJV
The prayer guide breaks it into seven simple movements.
1. Connect With God Relationally
“Our Father in Heaven…”
Jesus begins with relationship. Before our needs, our fears or our plans, we remember who He is: our Father. Romans 8:15 reminds us that through God’s Spirit we have been adopted as His children and can call Him “Abba, Father.”
“Father, thank You that I belong to You. Thank You that I can come to You openly and confidently today.”
2. Worship His Name
“…Hallowed be Your name…”
Before asking God to change our circumstances, we remember His character. The guide highlights several ways Scripture reveals who God is:
- God is Righteousness – He makes us clean
- God is Sanctifier – He calls us and sets us apart
- God is Healer – He heals
- God is Banner of Victory – He gives victory
- God is Shepherd – He speaks and leads
- God is Peace – He is peace in every storm
- God is Provider – He supplies our needs
Speak these truths personally: “God, You are my Shepherd. Lead me today. You are my Peace, and I trust You. You are my Provider, and everything I need comes from You.”
3. Pray His Agenda First
“…Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven…”
Prayer is not only asking God to bless our plans. It is asking Him to shape our hearts around His plans: people knowing Jesus, those in authority, the poor, the Church around the world, freedom for people in bondage, and God’s purpose in our own lives.
Instead of “God, give me what I want,” pray “God, what do You want?” Pray for His Kingdom in your family, church, workplace, city and relationships.
4. Depend on Him for Everything
“…Give us this day our daily bread…”
Jesus teaches us to bring our needs to God. The guide connects this with Psalm 121, reminding us that our help comes from the Lord, and suggests ten areas to pray through:
- Faith
- Marriage or dating
- Family
- Work or school
- Ministry
- Finances
- Physical health
- Social life
- Attitudes
- Emotional and mental life
Name what you need today. Ask for wisdom, provision, healing, direction, strength or peace, then surrender the outcome to Him.
“Father, this is what I need today. I trust You with it.”
5. Forgive and Be Forgiven
“…Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors…”
We ask God to reveal where we have sinned, made wrong choices or held the wrong attitudes, then we confess and receive His forgiveness.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins…” 1 John 1:9 NIV
But Jesus connects receiving forgiveness with extending it. Ask yourself: Is there anyone I am still holding something against? Is there resentment I need to release? The guide even encourages us to choose forgiveness in advance, deciding now that when people fail us we will not let bitterness take root.
“God, forgive me where I have fallen short. Clean my heart. And help me extend the same grace to others that You have given to me.”
6. Engage in Spiritual Warfare
“…And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one…”
Jesus teaches us to pray about temptation and spiritual opposition. The guide points to Ephesians 6:12 and reminds us that not every battle is visible, and that we can recognize lies, replace them with God’s truth, and walk in the freedom Jesus gives.
Ask God: What lie have I been believing? Where am I most vulnerable to temptation? What truth from Scripture do I need to stand on today?
Then replace the lie with truth. If it says “You are alone,” God is with you. If it says “Nothing will change,” nothing is too difficult for God. If it says “You will never be free,” remember what Jesus has already accomplished.
7. Express Faith in God’s Power
“…For Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever…”
Jesus ends by bringing our attention back to God, declaring who is ultimately in control. Jeremiah 32:17 reminds us that God created the heavens and the earth by His great power, and that nothing is too hard for Him.
The guide encourages us to declare:
- “Yours is the Kingdom” – all authority belongs to You.
- “Yours is the Power” – all power comes from You.
- “Yours is the Glory” – Your victory will be complete.
End your prayer with faith rather than fear. You may not know how everything will work out, but you know Who God is.
A Simple Prayer for Today
Father, thank You that I am Your child and that I can come to You today. You are holy, faithful, powerful and good. You are my Provider, my Shepherd, my Peace and my Healer.
Let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in my life. Align my heart with what matters to You.
I bring You everything I need today. Give me wisdom, provision, strength, peace and direction, and I trust You with what I cannot control.
Forgive me where I have fallen short, help me walk in freedom, and give me grace to forgive the people who have hurt me. Protect me from temptation, and replace every lie with Your truth.
Yours is the Kingdom. Yours is the power. Yours is the glory. Nothing is too difficult for You.

Pray the Way Jesus Taught
The Lord’s Prayer gives us a simple rhythm for daily prayer:
Connect with your Father. Worship who He is. Put His Kingdom first. Bring Him your needs. Receive forgiveness and forgive others. Stand against temptation and lies. Finish by declaring His power.
You do not have to find the perfect words. Jesus has already given us a place to begin.
