The Prayer of Jabez: A Prayer for Blessing, Influence, Presence & Protection

Sometimes a short prayer can carry a powerful reminder of how we are invited to approach God.

In 1 Chronicles, we find the prayer of Jabez:

“Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ‘Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.’ And God granted his request.”
1 Chronicles 4:10 NIV

Jabez’s prayer gives us four simple areas we can bring before God: blessing, influence, presence, and protection.

1. Pray for Blessing

Jabez begins by asking God to bless him.

Asking God for His blessing is not simply about wanting more for ourselves. It is recognizing that everything we have comes from Him and asking Him to provide in such a way that our lives can overflow into the lives of others.

“Oh, that You would bless me…” — 1 Chronicles 4:10

As you pray, acknowledge your dependence on God. Ask Him to provide what you need, but also ask Him to give you more opportunities, resources, wisdom, and grace so that you can become a blessing to the people around you.

2. Pray for Influence

Jabez continues:

“…enlarge my territory…” — 1 Chronicles 4:10

God can increase our influence not simply so that more people know our name, but so that more people can experience Him through our lives.

We can pray for God to open doors, create opportunities, and expand the places where we can make a difference for His Kingdom.

Ask God today:

Where do You want to use me?
Who have You placed around me?
What opportunities are You asking me to step into?

Trust Him to open the right doors and lead you along the path that will bring Him glory.

3. Pray for His Presence

Greater blessing and greater influence mean very little if we try to carry them in our own strength.

That is why Jabez prayed:

“…Let Your hand be with me…” — 1 Chronicles 4:10

We need the presence of God in every part of our lives. We need His wisdom in our decisions, His strength in difficult seasons, His direction for our future, and His power to accomplish what He has called us to do.

Before asking God to increase what is around you, ask Him to increase your awareness of Who is with you.

Pray for His hand to be upon your life. Ask for His guidance and anointing, and choose to depend on His strength rather than your own.

4. Pray for Protection

Finally, Jabez asks God for protection:

“…keep me from harm…” — 1 Chronicles 4:10

As we step into what God has called us to do, we also need His protection.

The prayer guide reminds us that when we influence the world for Jesus, we should recognize that opposition may come. But because God is with us, we do not have to live in fear.

Bring specific areas of your life before God today. Pray for protection over your family, relationships, health, mind, decisions, ministry, work, and future.

And ask Him to protect you even in the areas you cannot yet see.

A Simple Prayer for Today

God, thank You for everything You have already given me. I ask You to bless my life so that I can be a blessing to others. Enlarge my influence and open the doors You want me to walk through. Let Your hand be upon me and help me never rely only on my own strength. Lead me, guide me, and protect me from what could pull me away from You and Your purpose. Use my life for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray First

The prayer of Jabez is not about chasing a bigger life for ourselves. It is an invitation to trust God with every part of our lives.

Bless me.Use me.Be with me.Protect me.

As we pray, we can trust God with the outcome—just as Scripture tells us that after Jabez prayed, God granted his request.
